This article seeks to explore the spaces of refl ection on the current Bolivian art, which like at the beginning of the 20th century, fi nds itself engaged in a debate on the national identity. With regard to culture, the indigenist discourse of the government of Evo Morales searches to foment a reencounter with Native or “originary” expressions of art, a fact that makes it impossible −at least in theoretical terms− to work with contemporary concepts, since these only prove the “alienating (extranjerizante) cultural dependency”. The artists, however, are not strangers to this quest about the national identity and even express themselves through performances, video-art or installations. What is perceived in their work is an untiring search of that mirror which allows self-recognition. During the fi rst half of the 20th century it was Guzmán de Rojas with his indigenista proposition that rendered us a national image based on the presence of the Indian. Today the artists refl ect about the BEING in such subaltern groups as homosexuals, women or young people in a society that still keeps them in silence. In this way, all works appear to be violent, not only through the images they project, but also because they explore spaces that remain off limits for the more traditional artists as well as for society. But violence also manifests itself through the possibilities to name these things amidst a public discourse which pretends to negate other spaces of refl ection which would not be those proposed by Guzmán de Rojas a century earlier.</dc:description>

But violence also manifests itself through the possibilities to name these things amidst a public discourse which pretends to negate other spaces of refl ection which would not be those proposed by Guzmán de Rojas a century earlier.</mods:abstract>
